<image:caption>Painted in c. 1958-1970 10" x 14" Unsigned, Oil on canvas This painting is a wonderful example of Sydna's expertise in still life. It has balanced composition, a harmony of colors, and keep's your focus on the flowers, while appreciating the overall work. The milk jug is very well done - great highlights and shadows. And, you'd think the red background would be too jarring. Instead, Sydna created a mellow piece you can envision in a European country cottage. Sydna was proud of this painting and I know she'd be happy your seeing it today. Thank you. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog. <image:title>Flowers Gallery - Flowering Bonsai</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted in 1970 9" x 12" watercolor Watercolor pieces are a rare Sydna creation. But, this one is wonderfully composed and mellow - an impressionistic flowering bonsai tree. Sydna had an affinity for the orient due to her numerous vacations there. As we add more of her work to this website, you'll notice her attraction to the far east. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Flowers Gallery - Cosmos Lilies</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted in 1969 6" x 4" Oil on canvas board In this piece, Sydna shows her talent with flowers and simple colorful backgrounds. The symmetry of the flower arrangement, and the chosen, mellow colors, provide a relaxing atmosphere for the viewer - a trademark in Sydna still life paintings. Sydna did not leave us with a name for this piece. So, in researching the type of flower depicted, I couldn't find an exact mach. The faces and petal structure strongly resemble Cosmos flowers. Yet, cosmos typically have thinner stems, unlike Sydna's piece. Her stems appear more like those of calla lilies. Thus, through Sydna's eye, we designated this painting, Cosmos Lilies - a flower as original as Sydna herself. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog. <image:caption>Painted in 1977 9" x 12" Oil on paper A few things make this Sydna unique in her body of work. First, the original media was oil on paper - not canvas. This was very unusual since Sydna mostly used canvas for her oil works. Sometimes she used burlap or felt. On a rare occasion, she used wood. But, paper was quite unique. From a distance, it looks like colored pencil. But, upon closer inspection, we were surprised to see it was, indeed, oil. Another unique item in this piece is the double signature. Maybe she intended on using a small frame for the item and only the top signature would be seen. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog.</image:caption>

      <image:title>People Gallery - Gazing Man</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted c. 1958-1968 10" x 14" Oil on canvas When it came to painting depictions of people, Sydna's strength was creating the subject's eyes. This is no exception. The man's eyes are very warm, and fairly deep in thought, with the power of wisdom behind them. It's an amazing accomplishment in this work. And, at first glance, you think the subject's eyes are black. But, after greater inspection, you realize his eyes are an incredible deep blue. We welcome your comments in our blog. <image:title>People Gallery - Coal Miner</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted c. 1958-1968 9" x 12" Oil on canvas The strongest reason to appreciate this work is the miner's eyes and smile. His blue eyes relax you and you'll soon be mimicking his smile. Really. Click on the picture to see a larger version. Then just keep looking. The eyes and smile draw you into the picture. Keep staring. Soon, you'll find yourself relaxed and smiling too - or at least you'll have a smirk on your face. It's impossible not to be affected by this piece. And, although the painting appears to be made with charcoal, it really was oil paint - a testament to Sydna's abilities. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog. <image:caption>Painted c. 1958-1975 9" x 12" Oil on canvas This undated and unsigned Sydna is one of her darker pieces. The blackened room appears only to be lit by candlelight. At first, the subject could be observed as praying. But, the covered head, and face in hands, moves the observer to conclude the subject is having a deeper emotional reaction - mourning for a loved one. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog. <image:caption>Oil on black velvet - 20" x 10". Painted c. 1960-1978. Originally, I thought Sydna used chalk on this piece. But, upon closer inspection, I realized it was paint. This isn't the velvet Elvis kitsch of the 70s. It's soft strokes allow the black background to come through, while the more solid elements take advantage of the typical color 'pop' that velvet yields. And, Sydna's piece creates this balance between a lively and ominous scene - Gotham. Writer/artist Frank Miller has stated, "Gotham City is New York at night." [1] Sydna's work represents the view one would have looking at mid-town Manhattan from across the East River. The skyscrapers remind the viewer of the Empire State and Chrysler buildings. The United Nations is represented at the water's edge with impressions of the Secretariat tower and the General Assembly dome. And, beyond the buildings, light pollution originates from the theater district and Times Square. Remember, this wasn't the pleasant, Disneyfied scene of Times Square today. The 1960s and 70s was an era of sleaze, grit, grime, and crime. Sydna artfully captured the excitement and danger in this, one of her most dramatic pieces - Nighttime Gotham. <image:title>Urban Gallery - Verrazano Bridge</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted c. 1958-1969 Original Size: 24" x 20" Original Media: oil on canvas This early unsigned Sydna represents the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, entrance to the Upper Bay of New York Harbor. The bridge connects Staten Island (depicted left) with Brooklyn (right). In this painting, the artist's viewpoint is looking north, with the bright lights of a NYC evening. In the distance, you can see Manhattan and, to the left, the Statue of Liberty's torch. The observer's eye is immediately drawn to the bridge, gleaming white amongst the city lights and darkened waters. The bridge is certainly the painting's focal point. And, that makes sense, considering the time of creation. Bridge groundbreaking was 1959, the lower level finished in 1964, and the upper level in 1969. The painting is also significant in Sydna's life. As an infant, she entered America by passing through the Narrows, on her way to Ellis Island. In a way, it's her 'modern' version of her arrival to the United States. I think understanding that, allows you to forgive the weak elements of the painting's top half. The bottom half, with its attractive whites and blues, is where the picture's beauty lies. But, it's the top half, which holds Sydna's sentimental connection. We welcome your comments in our blog. <image:title>Urban Gallery - Autumn Road</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted c. 1964-1979 Original Size: 18" x 14" Oil on canvas This unsigned Sydna's lines gives the observer a comfortable, yet cool feeling. The golden, reddish, brown ground, and bare trees are reminders of autumn. Ominous clouds appear in the distance and brush strokes allude to rain showers. Sydna's broad brush strokes shows a determined hand in this piece. The sky, beautifully dramatic, is typical of Sydna's work. And, I believe it reflects her mid to late period, after she began developing those skills. Autumn Road possesses wonderful balance - The dominance of the road perspective and the big sky keep pulling your eye back to center, allowing you to comfortably look from one area to the next, while being comfortable with the painting's innate symmetry. The broad strokes allow your eye to follow down the road, up a roof, across the yellow-brown fields, or explore the sky's intensity. We welcome your comments in our blog.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Urban Gallery - Caribbean Street</image:title>
<image:caption>Painted in 1970 10" x 14" Oil on canvas Inspiration for this painting originated from Sydna's numerous Caribbean vacation cruises. You can feel the tropical breeze just looking at this piece. Although, based on the clothing of the painting's characters, this doesn't appear to be a modern period - maybe early 1900s? The painting depicts a peaceful scene, with a relaxed feel - something you'd expect in the tropics. People moving about, maybe a business transaction, and boats in the distant water. And the woman in the foreground appears to be on a rooftop, taking in the entire scene, Everything about the piece is relaxing, including the distant clouds. Typically, Sydna adds a lot of expression into her skies. And, in a way, the skies tell this painting's story as well - hazy, slow moving, and sun-bleached. Another beautiful day in the caribbean. <image:caption>Painted c. 1958-1985 12" x 9" Watercolor on paper Sydna rarely used watercolor or paper during her entire body of work. So, the tools and media make this a unique piece for her. Typical Sydna, the most enticing parts of this simple piece are its sky and water. And, I'm certain its inspiration came from Sydna's international travels. The piece's simplicity seems to be one of Sydna's earlier pieces. But, at this time we don't have enough information to make that determination. As always, welcome comments in our blog.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on Canvas. Painted in 1965. This a very colorful landscape and it's one of my favorites. The purple mountains seem draw your eye into the picture. Then, you begin to notice the other colors and scenery - the trees, rocks, grass...the waterfall and the shoreline in the distance, which could be a beach. There is something pristine about the way this scene is presented. I imagine the water to be crystal clear and refreshing, the grass soft on your feet. And, the rocks in the foreground, a perfect place to sit and drink it all in. It makes me want to take a canoe to the far shore to enjoy a snack before continuing my journey around the bend. <image:title>Landscape Gallery - Sleepy Fishing Village</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas. Painted in 1971. This impressionistic painting had no records of name given by Sydna. So, the name and description is based on our knowledge of her and her experiences. What I enjoy about this painting is the way my eye moves through it. It starts in the lower-half, as my brain seeks structure, and I notice, what appears to be, a working dock - not recreational. And, due to the boat sizes and waterway, it appears to be smaller in size, although used somewhat heavily. Then, my eye moves briefly to the hillside in the left foreground, before sweeping back to the water, and beyond the building to the dream-like land beyond the buildings, with it's swirling brush strokes, and recognizing hints of trees with darkened green leaves. Then, my eye moves back left, and deeper into the painting, noticing the more defined strokes, creating a mountainous-look. And, moving beyond to notice the darkened blue appearance of more distant and larger mountains. I notice the arc of peach and pink behind the mountains, indicating the subtle beauty of rising or setting sunlight. Although that arc could have a different significance, since they contrast with the shading above. That's when my I look at the clouds above, the beautiful, wispy feeling of the gray clouds. And, finally, I am pulled to the iridescence of white and silver, the brightest of light trying to peek through the gray skies. I enjoy the beauty of the work and wonder if it was a Japanese fishing village. Sydna loved the Japanese culture and visited Japan a few times in her life. To, me, that would explain the inclusion of a rising sun. I also look at the two people depicted on the dock and their clothing reminds me of working-class Japanese people. The painting, itself, has a similar composition to her 1965 work, Purple Mountains Majesty. The foreground has less here, in this case some dock pillars. But, similarities include an obstruction in the medium distance. On the left here, it's a hillside. In Majesty, it was a waterfall. The distant shoreline is somewhat similar between the paintings. Both works have bodies of water that appear to bend off to the distant left. And, both works, appear to have their light source from the top, left of the painting. What do you see in this work? What do you think? <image:title>Landscape Gallery - Rocky Coastline</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on Canvas. Painted c. 1969-1972 This painting does not have signature or date. But, we believe it is certainly a Sydna creation. It matches a similar brush style, reflected in other Sydna landscapes. And, elements of this painting's color palette are cimilar to Sydna's 1971 Sleepy Fishing Village. Although we're slowly becoming experts on Sydna's artistic evolution, we accept this as a Synda landscape. - especially with its warm, muted tones, sunrise/sunset scene, and inclusion of water. I am a little fascinated with the ambiguous emotions this painting draws. The choice of an olive-type color, featured in the piece's lowlights (vs. highlights), invites peaceful, yet...ambiguous feelings. Continuing to view the painting, I get no sense if it is set in a warm or cool climate. Is it winter or summer? Morning or evening? Humid or slightly dry? Desolate or lush topography? In one moment, I visualize the rocks covered with algae. And, in the next moment, everything appears desolate - including the larger land mass in the upper-right section. So, in this respect, I find myself in a purgatory-type of reaction - neither loving nor hating it. But, I do notice when I look at it, I stay for a number of minutes. I engage with the painting in a continuous attempt to determine if the piece is speaking to me or if I'm trying to give the painting meaning based on my personal emotional state at the time. <image:title>Landscape Gallery - Windmill at Water's Edge</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 24" x 36". Painted in 1964. At 36" tall, this is one of Sydna's largest pieces. It's interesting that Sydna painted a number of landscapes but very few city scenes. In 1964, she had lived in the Suburbs fewer than 10 years. For most of her early life, she lived in Manhattan and the Bronx - far from a rural experience. You would think she'd paint some street scenes, depicting her life in the big city. Yet, her urban works are from a distance, or from other cultures. I think it's because of her use of painting as an escape from her daily life and her past. Her landscape works are lush and peaceful - no honking horns or shouting people - just the faint sounds of moving water and moving leaves. Windmill at Water's Edge is another tranquil expression. Sydna's use of greens and yellows reflects the lush greenery and time of day. Once again, Sydna used either the time around sunrise or sunset. Maybe she enjoyed the additional range of colors at those times. Yet, the mellow colors bring some sadness to the piece's lower-half - almost sallow in appearance. At the horizon, you'll notice a patch of red, leading the observer to believe it is autumn and the far shore is filled with maple trees. Once again, Sydna shows her strength in creating beautiful, luminescent skies. Her mix of blue skies, wispy clouds, and gray shadows creates a wonderful 3D effect, bringing hope to the day, and a better tomorrow. What do you think? <image:title>Landscape Gallery - Windmill at Water's Edge Oval</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas - 20" x 16". Painted in 1967. The most important question is...why? Why paint a second version of Windmill three years later and in a different shape? Was it for a gift? Did Sydna think she could improve the work? The colors are brighter in this second piece and the artist's perspective is lower to the ground. Although Sydna created different a number of paintings with flowers, this is the only painting we found that was a replica of an earlier piece. What are your thoughts? <image:caption>Painted in 1967 16" x 12" Oil on plywood This is one of my favorites and a rare look for Sydna. In her entire collection, there are only two abstract expressionistic pieces - both amazing. I'm very surprised she didn't explore this more. I think she would have found great success with this style. Available in a 3-panel version - great for increasing the visual impact on a large wall. As always, we welcome your comments in our blog. The result was a few pieces of work. Aunt Ellen never thought her work was good. And, her work hasn't been seen since it's creation over 40 years ago. We welcome your comments in our blog. <image:caption>Painted 1969 18" x 14" Oil on canvas This rare Sydna painting is in the cubism style. It almost looks like a stained glass piece. And, we chose the name from the inspiration of the piece's elements - a palm tree, dove, bowl of fruit, palm leaves, an Oud [1], and a wine container. The background is reminiscent of desert sands and an oasis or coastal waters. [1] An Oud is a pear-shaped instrument commonly used Arabic, Hebrew, Turkish, Byzantine, and Middle Eastern music. <image:caption>Painted in 1961 12" x 16" Oil on canvas Yes, we know the word parrot is misspelled. And, we had thought about correcting the title. But, Sydna misspelled the word when she wrote it on the canvas' back. We'll never know if the misspelling was intentional, a mistake, or had other meaning. But, we've decided to keep the original name. It makes us uneasy to leave it that way. Every time we see it, our head is screaming, 'THAT'S THE WRONG SPELLING!" But, the emotional frustration is consistent with our relationship with grandma. So, we leave it as it. As always, we, welcome your comments in our blog.</image:caption>

<image:title>Landscapes - Purple Mountains Majesty</image:title>
<image:title>Landscapes - Sleepy Fishing Village</image:title>
<image:title>Landscapes - Rocky Coastline</image:title>
<image:title>Landscapes - Windmill at Water's Edge</image:title>
<image:title>Landscapes - Windmill at Water's Edge Oval</image:title>
<image:title>Urban - Nighttime Gotham</image:title>
<image:title>Urban - Verrazano Bridge</image:title>
<image:title>Urban - Autumn Road</image:title>

      <image:title>Urban - Caribbean Street</image:title>

It has balanced composition, a harmony of colors, and keep's your focus on the flowers, while appreciating the overall work. The milk jug is very well done - great highlights and shadows. But, we've decided to keep the original name. It makes us uneasy to leave it that way. Every time we see it, our head is screaming, 'THAT'S THE WRONG SPELLING!"
